Here's what we were starting with - a flat gravel yard with basic concrete steps and a simple iron railing leading to the front door. Functional, but nothing that made the home stand out. The homeowner wanted something that actually matched the character of the house. That meant ripping everything out and building from scratch.
We went with Keystone Venetian pavers in a Winter Blend for the patio surface. The color variation in that blend - warm browns, tans, and charcoal tones - works really well against the dark green siding. For the retaining wall steps, we used Keystone Harrington block in a Sand Blend with matching caps. The combination gives the whole front of the house a cohesive, intentional look that the original concrete setup never had.
The three-tier layout was the hardest part of this build. Getting the grade changes right, making sure each level transitioned cleanly into the next, and keeping the retaining wall block courses level and tight - that's where most contractors run into trouble on a job like this. We don't cut corners on base prep or compaction, because that's what determines whether this thing looks the same in 15 years as it does today.
The finished result speaks for itself. A wide paver field runs the length of the front of the home, stepping up in three distinct tiers toward the front door. River rock borders and natural boulders frame the planting areas and give the space a grounded, natural feel. It's a complete front yard - not just a walkway. The homeowner was thrilled, and honestly, so were we. This one was genuinely difficult to pull off, and it came out exactly the way it was designed.
If your front yard is stuck with a plain concrete path or outdated gravel, a custom paver system like this is one of the best things you can do for curb appeal and long-term home value. We work throughout the Mission, KS area and handle everything from design to final install.
